I'm excited to let you know about two opportunities for studying West African drumming. Both of these series will allow you to immerse yourself into the music tradition of the Malinke people of Guinea, home to my teachers Namory Keita and master drummer Famoudou Konate.

Over the course of the next 4 months I'll be teaching a 4 hour "Djembe Intensive" workshop on every first Saturday, starting in February. We'll explore the rhythms of the drum ensemble as played in the Hamanah region of Guinea: the stick drums Doundounba, Sangba, Kenkeni and the Djembe in its role as accompanying and soloing instrument. In each workshop I'll teach a different rhythm, all four building in complexity and degree of challenge. Each "Intensive" is for drummers of all levels.

Djembes are available for rent. Please let me know ahead of time!

My fourth "DJEMBE INTENSIVE" workshop takes place on Saturday, May 7th

Time: 9 am - 1:30 pm (we'll break for lunch)
Cost: $60
Location: Portland Friends Meeting House,
1837 Outer Forest Ave., Portland, Maine

This monthly series of Saturday workshops has been very successful. During the 4 hours of instruction you can immerse yourself into the music tradition of the Malinke people of Guinea, learn the rhythms of the drum ensemble as played in the Hamanah region and the song that goes along with the specific rhythm we're playing.

Location: Portland Friends Meeting House, 1837 Outer Forest Ave., Portland, Maine.
