West African Drum Class in January/February with Annegret
Start the new year with drumming... I hope you had a good beginning of 2017 and are now ready to play some drums! I'm offering a 5 week drum class for Beginner and Intermediate drummers focusing on the rhythms from West Africa. We will learn to play Djembe and the three bass drums Dounounba, Sangba and Kenkeni to create interesting polyrhythms that are fun to play in a group. WHERE: Portland Friends Meeting House 1837 Outer Forest Ave, Portland WHEN: 5 Wednesday evenings Janu

FOLI (there is no movement without rhythm) original version by Thomas Roebers and Floris Leeuwenberg
Here’s a cool youtube video I came across some time ago which shows the interconnection of rhythm to everyday activities in Guinea, West Africa: walking, working, singing and playing music together. I like the images beginning at 1’50" where they show the process of making a djembe, from cutting down the tree to carving the body and forging the rings and bells, and then finally stretching the skin and shaving the fur. #AnnegretBaier #Rhythm #Djembe
